Alternative Humanist Wedding
An alternative, relaxed, unstructured wedding day at The Over Barn near Gloucester.
Becky and Nick wanted to do things differently, a sentiment I wholeheartedly back! They didn’t care about things like not seeing each other before the ceremony, having speeches or a first dance. They made their own rules for their day. I believe that you should only do the things you care about (and not the things you don’t) on your wedding day.
Becky and Nick got ready together in the morning, helping each other get dressed. Having each other there for support like you would on any other day makes perfect sense to me.
Once at The Over Barn we took a few couple photos. Getting good shots in the bag early is a great idea — it means you don’t need as much time away from guests later. We then took their family photos before guests arrived for some pre ceremony drinks. Becky and Nick greeted everyone together, setting the informal tone they wanted.
They opted for a Humanist ceremony, known also for having no rules, they are completely bespoke and all about you. It was conducted by my very own Husband Martin (of MAD Ceremonies). I don’t think I’m being biased when I say it was truly magic! There were personal stories, surprise elements, music, friend participation, hand fasting, vows and ring exchanges PLUS a pom pom confetti exit!!! All this took place outside in the courtyard at The Over Barn which was the perfect setting for an intimate feel.
After the ceremony there was music by the incredible Mister Kanish (highly recommend) and vegan ice cream from Booja-Booja in the cutest little van. A relaxed schedule meant they just got to relax in the August sunshine drinking and eating ice cream — perfect. Until it was time to sit down inside The Over Barn for a stunning vegan meal from Vegan Pimp Food.
The evening light was beautiful so the three of us headed out to catch some golden evening light. This is the absolute best time to take your couple photos if the weather is on your side (within the hour before sunset – golden hour). It’s always a good idea to get some earlier in the day in case the weather doesn’t hold out, but if possible, this is where to plan in the time for your couple photos.
Once back at the barn there was more vegan food and treats, relaxed drinks and then an AMAZING couple of sets from Mister Kanish who play their own versions of well known songs and are just mega!!
As usual, throughout the day I just stayed in the background, documenting what happened. We went off for some couple photos and of course took a few group photos of family but otherwise I just capture what I see. My idea of the perfect day.
